New Leathers

As for new stuff, I have a couple of very cool new leather options coming available on select items.

First off is shrunken bison.  These are bison shoulders that have been shrunken and tipped beautifully which gives them an amazing 3D effect.   Tanned by Horween in Chicago, this is amazing leather:

Modern bifold, $75:

Small knife roll, $129:

Another interesting leather I’ve been sort of developing is a “tumbled” horsehide.  This is the same horsehide that is normally used in my wallets, and hand rolled until it has this beautiful, natural, pebble grain.  Extremely durable, yet made suprisingly soft and supple by the rolling process:

Simple two pocket card case, $55

Classic wallet, $89:

So there you go!  Choices, choices,  choices.  Great for christmas though!  Speaking of which, if you are planning on ordering something for a christmas present, the sooner the better!  Last year I got hit sort of all at once, so if you are considering a knife roll, or a wallet, or anything else, get in touch now to make sure you get it by christmas!

Tooling, Purses, and a little Christmas talk

tooling is something I’ve been doing for fun for a while now, mainly for fun.  It is super addictive, and can be very expressive in a very specific way – there is no other art form quite like it.  It has taken me a while to get to point where I am happy enough with it to actually share it with everyone, and I am hoping in the near future to begin offering one of a kind tooled wallets every once in a while when I have the time to do them.  These two I finished up yesterday, and they will be for sale at Ambiance in downtown SLO pretty soon.  Stop by and check them out, I also have some purses and other wallets in there as well.  The large one will be selling for $220, and the smaller size will be $165.

I would love some feedback, let me know if you all would be interested in more wallets like these!  I will be doing some more smaller men’s ones pretty soon that I will post when it comes time.

I’ve been crazy busy lately on some other fun projects, lots of purses.

This purse will also be at Ambiance in SLO priced at $265:

This next one is made of front quarter horsehide, which is very soft and has a very unique rustic quality to the grain.  This is on the smaller side and would make an great small purse, its about 10″ x 8″ x 3.5″, and is fully lined will an awesome red and white striped canvas.  It is available for $195 shipped directly from me, shoot me an email at JAWLeatherGoods@gmail.com.

And finally for today, we have my current personal favorite.  This next purse/ satchel is made from a very beautiful italian vegetable tanned calfskin in a very nice medium brown color, with a black chromexcel gusset and a natural horsehide strap.  It is hard to do it justice with photos, the calfskin is simply gorgeous.   This is also currently available, at $225.  It is 11″ x 8.5″ x 4″, so it would make a very decent sized purse, and it will gain a beautiful character over time, only looking better as it ages.  Again, shoot me an email if you are interested!

I will be doing a Christmas mega-post pretty soon here, because it’s almost that time.  Keep in mind that I usually have a 2-3 week wait on items, so please this year let’s get Christmas orders started early!  Shoot me an email at JAWLeatherGoods@gmail.com with questions or comments, or concerns, or just to chat.

Horsehide knife roll

One of the things that I like most about leather is how many different types there are.  There are literally hundreds of different ways to achieve a preserved hide, and this allows the maker to (occasionally) have a field day trying out different leathers for different purposes. Recently I got my hands on some front quarter horsehide from Horween tannery.

Horsehide is fascinating because it falls into three distinct, and very different categories.  You have Shell cordovan, which comes from the butt and is very very dense, yet still very pliable making it excellent for shoes and assorted small leather goods like wallets and card holders.  Above the Cordovan, the hip section is a long narrow piece that is thicker than the Shells, yet not as dense.  It is a completely different leather but is fantastic for boots, wallets, even small bags.  Now when you get above the hip section of the horse, you get the “front quarters,” which are much lighter in weight, and are extremely soft and supple making it perfect leather for jackets, since it is stronger than cowhide of equal weight.   It is truly beautiful leather, and perfect for an all leather knife roll, which is something I’ve had on the back burner for a while now.

It’s not clear whether I will continue to make these, it really depends on the demand.  Let me know what you all think, and shoot me an email if you are interested in one of these.  They will be very limited for now, so swoop one up while you can!

Im working on some other new stuff as well, hoping to fill some gaps in my product line:

Red Horsehide Chromexcel now available for wallets, small items

I have some very interesting leather available in very limited quantities.  Some horween horse butt that is brown with a striking red pull-up.  This means that it appears brown, but when you move it around, the areas that are moved come up a bright red color.  It’s very beautiful, and unusual.  Shoot me an email if you are interested in a wallet, or other small item made of this leather, the butts are small, so no bags or knife rolls unfortunately.  Here’s some photos, very hard to get the color right.

A little primer on horse butt:

Horse butts are a long strip that seperates the front quarters of the horse (ususally used for garments), from the Shell Cordovan, which is the most prized piece of horse hide, and is actually the butt cheeks of the horse.  The horse butt (more like horse hips) is a very tight grained, heavy leather that doesn’t stretch very much, and is extremelely durable.  Its probably the single best leather I’ve ever worked with for wallet outsides.  All of my wallet styles are avialable in either this red horsehide, or brown horsehide with natural vegetable tanned calfskin insides.

Horsehide is one of those very unique materials that is very uncommon, yet stunning.  These are tanned by Horween tannery in Chicago, Il in their “chromexcel” style meaning that it is hot stuffed with greases and waxes that are solid at room temerature, making the leather very water resistant and waxy.  As for me, it’s a personal favorite.

Have a good one,

Jon
